I’ve spent some time extracting shellball ROM’s for people who have flashed a full ROM, and want to go (semi) back to stock, but have mislaid their backup. For ChromeOS to update, you will need change the HWID to something valid e.g.

gbb_utility –set –hwid="PEPPY A2A-A2E-A5W" bios.bin

You’ll probably also want to download every file in the relevant directory to ensure the GBB script works. You can use lftp’s “mirror” feature to download all those files quickly and easily. Find the shellball ROM’s @

  1. Hi John,

I’m hoping to return my Chromebook (Dell 11′) to pure stock, after having flashed your custom firmware on it such that pressing Ctrl+D is no longer a viable option during bootup. After the last step of your Shellball tutorial, what do I have to do next?

    1. It doesn’t sound to me as though you have flashed back a shellball. I would say you are still using custom. And the script will flash a shellball for you, if you want. However, if you used option 1 to flash at the start, there’s no need, and you could instead use option 2, to flash back a stock BOOT_STUB and get the scary dev screen back.
